“Plant-Based” Meat

Probably one of the biggest restaurant food trends of 2019 is Impossible Burgers - burgers that are made from “plant-based” meat. This new pseudo-meat is made from four natural ingredients: potato protein, coconut oil, wheat protein, and heme. Heme is an iron-loaded molecule found in meat and plants that gives off “meat-like” taste and aroma when it’s cooked with sugar and amino acids. Kind of hard to believe, but plant-based meat contains more iron and protein than a real meat patty with zero cholesterol!

Comfort Food Substitutes

We all long for the comfort foods of our youth, and now there are smart swaps to help cut back on calories. Pizza crust can be made with cauliflower or chickpeas. There are even cauliflower pancakes! Other interesting options include zoodles, yuba-based pasta, black bean brownies, and cauliflower gnocchi. Chickpea pasta has more fiber and protein than traditional pasta, far fewer carbs, and it’s gluten-free!

Veggies Have Become So Creatively Hip!

Veggies are some of the best summer foods and super versatile for creative summer menu ideas. Roast an entire head of cauliflower or cabbage (cabbage is the current rage!) or explore new twists on classic spaghetti squash. Mushroom steaks are making a big comeback and are so delicious and satisfying with their meaty flavor. This may sound nuts, but bruised or misshapen fruits and vegetables - which are still totally edible - are a new craze! Start-up companies are shipping out boxes of sad-looking fruit and veggies right to your front door. Try grilling your corn ears for a new side dish. Butter them lightly and add seasonings to reap the nutrition from corn without all of the calories. One ear of corn has 60 calories, 2 grams of fiber and provides lutein and zeaxanthin which are important for eye health.

Just Plain Interesting!

A big 2019 superfood is deep purple “forbidden” rice which is full of antioxidants, protein, and fiber. Forbidden rice was reserved for ancient Chinese royalty, plus, it’s pretty cool looking! Tahini (ground sesame seed spread) desserts have replaced classic peanut butter desserts in restaurants across the country in tortes, ice cream bars, milkshakes, and banana muffins. GrubHub and similar apps and services are the new drive-thrus, delivering restaurant food right to your door. CBD is showing up in lots of commercial drinks and will slowly make its way into foods in the near future, too.

Food and Drink Pairings

What are some fun summer food and drink pairings? Milkshake IPAs are trending and go great with freshly grilled burgers filled with a pungent cheese. Grill up a well-seasoned skirt steak with grilled romaine and a yogurt-based Caesar dressing, and top it off with an ice-cold lager. Orange wines are hot as well and pair beautifully with grilled fish.
